QUANTUM FIELD THEORY APPROACH

Quantum Field Theory Approach to Condensed Matter Physics

A balanced combination of introductory and advanced topics provides a new and unique perspective on the quantum field theory approach to condensed matter physics. Beginning with the basics of these subjects, such as static and vibrating lattices, independent and interacting electrons, the functional formulation for fields and different generating functionals and their roles, this book presents a unified viewpoint illustrating the connections and relationships among various physical concepts and mechanisms. Advanced and newer topics bring the book up to date with current developments and include sections on cuprate and pnictide superconductors, graphene, Weyl semimetals, transition metal dichalcogenides and topological insulators. Finally, well-known subjects such as the quantum Hall effect, superconductivity, Mott and Anderson insulators, and the Anderson–Higgs mechanism are examined within a unifying QFT-CMP approach. Presenting new insights on traditional topics, this text allows graduate students and researchers to master the proper theoretical tools required in a variety of condensed matter physics systems.

REVIEW

I have only praise for this excellent work. It is the first book that I have seen with a direct hands-on approach to QFT in Condensed Matter at a higher level. It is very accessible for researchers in Condensed Matter that wants to get to the point of using Effective field treatments of Condensed Matter problems. Coulomb interactions, transport and response to applied fields are done with clarity and with full detailed QFT TREATMENT. EXAMPLE SYSTEMS IN THE LAST PART OF THE BOOK FURTHER EXPOSE A "WORKING MODEL" FOR APPLYING QFT AT SERIOUS AND DEEPER VIEWS OF WHERE MANY BODY THEORY FALLS SHORT.

REVIEW

There are already numerous books on quantum many-body theory applications on condensed matter. Among them, this monograph stands out for a number of reasons, including a) balanced introductory part, without spending too much time in fundamentals like Green's function of functional integral, but still in a self-contained way b) Modern examples, comparing to many existing books this one truly introduces many modern examples which are less common to introduce in any other many-body book. In particular the introduction is never superficial but hits right to the point. I would recommend this without reservation.
